The Low Down on Snow Plows and ATV Winter Accessories
At Throttle Powersports, we’ve got what you need to embrace the winter season, whether it’s a snow plow, winter gear, or heated accessories, so read on for the ideal add-ons to make your winter ride that much better.
SNOW PLOWS FOR ATVS AND SXSS
As much as winter riding is about fun, ATVs can also make your life infinitely easier when it comes to snow removal. Having a plow attachment for your ATV or SXS will make clearing your driveway and sidewalk an absolute breeze.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF ATV PLOW KITS
An ATV plow kit includes not only the plow blade, but the hardware to mount the blade to your ATV. At Throttle Powersports, we carry KFI plow kits and CFMoto plow kits, and the main difference between the two is how they’re mounted to the machine. Almost all machines can have either kit installed, and it costs about the same to do so.
COMMON SIZE OF PLOWS FOR ATVS AND UTVS
ATV snow plows come in several sizes, and determining which one will work for you will depend on the size and power of your ride. The most common snow plow sizes are:
- 48 inch
- 60 inch
- 72 inch
If your engine size is 500 cc or less, we recommend the smaller, 48-inch blade, although most machines in the 500 cc range should be able to handle a 60-inch plow as well.
If you’ve got an SXS (or a larger, more powerful ATV), we suggest a 60 to 72 inch plow since those machines are considerably wider than an ATV.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SNOW PLOWS
Snow plows for ATVs are commonly made of metal, but there are plows made of a polymer plastic, which is not only much lighter, but a lot more slick, which means less snow will build up and stick to the plow. The material of your plow would depend on how often you use it and what you plan to do with it.
THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN PLOWING
It’s not a matter of simply slapping a plow on your ATV and diving right in, there’s a few things to consider first before getting work.
Have Enough Power: Make sure the ATV you want to mount a plow onto has enough power to do so. We can help you determine that and do the install for you.
Avoid really deep snow and heavy drifts: Attempting to clear a heavy, compact snowdrift with your ATV plow will cause far more wear and tear on the plow and the ATV, so stick to lighter and less deep snow for your plow.
If you’re plowing the first snowfall of the season, we recommend pushing the snow piles as far back as you can in order to make room for the additional snow throughout the season.
Determine the depth and angle: The depth will depend on how deep the snow you want to move is, and the angle will depend on the surface beneath the snow. The more you plow, the easier it will be to determine the best depth and angle for the job at hand.
Maneuverability
Keep in mind that the bigger your snow plow, the less maneuverability you’ll have, so if you’re going to be plowing somewhere with tight corners, lots of obstacles, or near buildings, you may want to go with a smaller plow instead.
Weight
The weight of your machine is another important factor to consider when plowing because more weight will give you better traction, momentum, and stability.
You can also add more weight to your machine by strapping sand bags to the back, which will also help offset the extra weight of the plow in the front, and keep your machine better balanced.
GET YOUR SNOW PLOW INSTALLED

OTHER WINTER GEAR AND ACCESSORIES FOR YOUR ATV
There’s a lot more to ATVing in winter than just snow plows. So let’s have a look at some of our other popular add-ons and gear to make your winter riding even better.
MAKE TRACKS
You could try driving your ATV through the snow on your regular tires, but if you really want to tear through the snow, you’ll want snow tracks.
Being much wider than your standard tires, tracks cover much more surface area, thus making riding in the snow a lot safer.
WINTER GEAR FOR WARM RIDES
Yes, you should obviously bundle up when riding in the winter, but there’s some cool accessories that’ll help make the winter riding much more comfortable.
Heated handlebars: Gloves are one thing, but anyone that’s driven a car or truck with a heated steering wheel knows that having a heated grip is next level. Handlebar warmers will make steering your ATV through the snow much more pleasant.
Cab heater: The bonus of a SXS is having a cab to sit in while you drive it, and while it’ll do a good job of blocking the wind, the cold outside can still get in. A heated (like the picture below) will keep you and your passenger nice and toasty while you enjoy the winter rides.
