Its Plow Season! Make it Fun!

Snow shoveling. We all hate doing it, but it’s part of being a good neighbour and winter citizen, so we grumble through it and get it done.

But what if there was a better way? Dare we say, in a more entertaining way?

Instead of breaking your back with that old shovel, why not hitch up a plow to your ATV or SXS and have some fun? You must do it anyway, and you might as well enjoy it, right?

Attaching a plow to your ride might seem pretty straightforward, but there are a few things to consider before buying one. Firstly, can your ATV or SXS handle a plow attachment? There’s no point in getting one if your ride can’t take it, so make sure it’s got the horsepower and torque to push through the snowdrifts. The last thing you want is to damage your engine; ensure to check with your local ATV dealer like Throttle to speak with a professional.

Your vehicle should also have 4WD if you’re going to plow, as it will be much easier to move around on snow and ice with it than without. You can get proper winter tires for your ATV or switch your tires out for tracks, which will make it easier to get the job done.

What size of plow blade you choose will depend not only on your vehicle’s engine power but also on the size of the area you plan to plow. You can get away with a smaller blade if you’ve got a small driveway or walkway to clear. You’ll likely want a larger blade to make the job go faster if you’ve got a large driveway or access road.

You’ll also want to consider how comfortable you’ll be on your vehicle while plowing. A SxS usually has an enclosure that will help keep the wind chill off you, which might make it the best choice for plowing. On the other hand, you can get heated grips for your ATV, which may not help the wind, but it’s better than nothing. Always dress appropriately for the weather. Plowing isn’t fun when you’ve got frostbite.

Once you finish plowing, you’ve got to make sure you clean any snow and ice off the blade. If you don’t, rust can form and ruin the blade, so definitely take the time at the end of the day. When not using your plow, lower the blade to the ground to reduce the wear on your winch and suspension.

Again, the team at Throttle will best inform you of the information you require when purchasing a plow for your ride. Having the option through these months sure does make utilizing your ATV or SXS all year round worth it, but it does mean more wear and tear on your rig. At Throttle Powersports, we make sure your ride is of top of mind in every endeavor you decide to take on to enhance the usage of your ATV.
