What are the costs of buying and maintaining a motorcycle?

Anyone who rides will tell you that few things are better than ripping down the highway beneath a bright sky on a motorcycle. The freedom of the open road and what you’ll find along the way are very appealing.

If you’re thinking you want to feel that same exhilaration but aren’t sure if you can handle the costs, worry not! We’re going to break it down for you so you can make an informed choice.

Upfront costs

Obviously, the largest cost right off the hop is the bike itself. The cost of a motorcycle for sale will depend on the brand, and if it’s new or used, so you’ll want to get yourself to our showroom to see our selection.

We have Kawasaki and CFMOTO motorcycles for you to choose from, with prices ranging from $4,000 to $14,000, depending on the make and model. From Kawasaki, we have Vulcan, Z, and Ninja models, both new and used. As we are also a CFMOTO dealer, we have brand new 2024 models, including the Papio, NK, and SS. Whether you’re thinking about ripping down the highway or taking the leisurely route, our motorcycles will meet your needs at a reasonable price.

The next thing you’ll need to purchase is the right safety gear. A helmet is the most obvious thing, but you’ll also want gloves, boots, pants, and a jacket that will keep you safe from the elements as well as road rash. What brand you’re looking at will depend on the cost, but you can expect to pay at least a few hundred dollars if you’re buying everything new.

Ongoing costs

Once you’ve got the motorcycle and the safety gear, you’ll have to budget for ongoing costs. This includes licensing, insurance, maintenance, and fuel.

In Ontario, a license is required for any motorized vehicle, no matter if it’s a motorcycle or a moped. For the motorcycles we’re talking about, you’ll need an M license, which requires you to be at least 16 years old, take a written test, an eye test, and a road test the first time you apply. The full cost can vary depending on what you need, but the full fee list is available online.

Once you can legally drive your motorcycle, you need to insure it. In Ontario, motorcycle insurance can range between $1,500 and $3,500 per year, but like with car insurance, how much you pay depends on several factors. Everyone must have mandatory coverage, including third-party liability, direct compensation, uninsured automobile, and accident benefits. On top of that, you can add optional coverage, which includes collision and comprehensive coverage.

The next ongoing cost is the maintenance of your motorcycle. If you want to keep your ride smooth, you need to take care of it. A brand-new bike may not need maintenance for a few years, but a used one may need it sooner. Factor in the cost of regular maintenance, like oil changes and chain maintenance, as well as the cost of new tires, should you need them.

The last ongoing cost is everyone’s favourite thing to complain about, fuel. Fortunately, motorcycles don’t cost nearly as much as a car or truck to fill up and often have better mileage. How much you need to budget for fuel will depend on how often you’re going out for a ride and how far you’re going. But overall, it should be far less than a car or truck.
